I love every minute of this exceedingly long, excessively detailed read about the fact that features of our life—like time—are not fixed. Clocks differ even at the atomic level. Tom visits the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology to see their clocks and learn that there's an international consortium of timekeepers who retroactively vote on what time it was and update their clocks accordingly.
